Colored Pencil Instruction
My History with Colored Pencil
by Amy Lindenberger
Colored pencil is a relatively new fine art
medium, when compared with oils,
watercolors, etc. However, I've been
working with colored pencil for more than
thirty years, and teaching classes on their
usage for more than a quarter century!

The Colors of White in
Colored Pencil
February 2 and 9
9:30 am - 4 pm
If you have ever tried to purchase white
paint at the hardware, you're well aware
that "white" isn't just "white"; the
same is true in nature. White flowers,
berries and fungi can be challenging to
portray, because the colors they contain
are present in such light values and
dulled intensities that it can be
tempting to just render them in shades
of gray or brown, which can rob your
composition of some of its beauty and
impact. In this class we will employ
several strategies with colored pencil
and watercolor pencil (or watercolor) to
create whites that are rich with
beautiful nuances

Colored Pencil I
April 7, 14 and 27
9:30 am - 4 pm

Using different techniques, you can
make colored pencil tones look like a
drawing or a painting, providing you
with the versatility to create a wide
variety of surface textures. Develop
your color perception and become
familiar with colored pencil tools, color
applications and color theory
fundamentals. Learn to layer colors to
achieve different hues and densities and
master a variety of techniques,
including burnishing, impressed line
and sgraffito.
Colored Pencil on

Pastelmat, a cellulose fiber-coated
surface made by Clairfontaine, is one
of the hottest new surfaces for colored
pencil. Thanks to its sanded surface,
color builds quickly, handling much like
pastel. But because it is a very
fine-grained sand, it is not difficult to
cover with colored pencil. Amy will walk
students through the process of
creating a rich colored pencil drawing
on this unique surface. Call for
materials list.

Fridays, November 30 and
December 7
Time: 10 am - 3 pm
Price: $85 for 2-class session
